I've been reading a lot of blogs about debt and frugality a while, but this particular post really stood out for me. I'm in the same place.. in debt, only new to starting to pay it off successfully... but my lack of money and the stress has caused me to lose my social life, a happy work life, and lose the crutch of impulsively buying my "happiness"

LOVE your blog, - and you're doing fantastic. A real inspiration to another geek in debt :) Keep movin forward!

What about the other debt? Are you making any payments? What's the status?

Best,

@ imho - Yes, I'm hoping to get up to $900/month to Mom by the end of the year. Still waiting for final confirmation from the IRS, I have done everything they have asked, but they are slow as molasses.

Oh, and to answer your question about struggling with lack of patience, YES. Although I'm not in debt, I'm in the "accumulating" phase. I live frugally and am just accumulating more each month to get to that point where my net worth is enough so that I can quit my well compensated job that I often don't like too much, and semi retire. Sometimes the accumulation seems to go so slow. The last 6 months the value of many investments has severely decreased, so my net worth has almost become stagnant (saving about equal to what the investments are losing). I am getting SO impatient, as this market downturn was NOT in my plan. Seems like I am in a holding pattern with my job to get the income, just doing time....(and often losing patience), especially when I hear of people who make $100's of thousands per year or more.

However trite it may seem though, I try to remind myself often that I am really very fortunate, and it is not all about money. But I often lose patience, because my goal of retirement is about money - both having enough to retire, and in the meantime, due to trying to earn it, having a job working 12-14 hours/day and virtually no life. That is why it seems like I am doing time....I think you have a much better balance on the having a life issue, and I'm trying to learn from you.

Good job debtkid. $1500/month is TERRIFIC!!!
Did you ever get the IRS to finalize and agree to the $600/month payment? That comes out of your business, correct?

On the payments to your mom, it sounds like you hope to be up to $900/month if I have my math correct. Terrific. As I recall, your mom is not charging interest, so you are doing the right thing in paying this back asap, so she can rebuild some principle. I seem to remember you owe her about $140k or so. I can't help but think that even with the current market, she could be pulling in $600 or so income per month on that, so it is great to hear you are getting ahead and paying some principle. Are you paying the debt to your mom out of the salary your business is paying you, or is that separate?
