Hey Debt Kid:

A few ideas re: low cost renting.

For two years, while living in California, I had a second home in the Pacific NW. I only came up every four to eight weeks. To offset the mortgage, I found a “roommate” who lived in the place full-time. This person got everything you could imagine for $500 p/month with the knowledge and understanding that every so often (with anywhere from 12 to 48 hours notice) I would be a guest in the second master suite.

This worked out great. My “roommate” made sure the place was safe and secure when I wasn’t there and I got a small offset on my mortgage.

Because the true market rent on my second home was significantly more, I encouraged both roommates to put the balance they would have spent in renting the place as a solo tenant into savings to buy a home. Both did.

Perhaps you can find a situation like that where someone has a second home in Seattle where they need a “caretaker” on the property when they are away.

Just a thought

You know what they say – It’s impossible to attain your goals if you don’t have any.

Good job putting your goals down on paper. That’s half the battle some times.
