Can you only check your credit score once a year?

No, in fact, you can check your credit score as often as you’d like. Checking your score does not damage your score. It might put a dent in your wallet, but that’s about it.

Once a year you can get your credit report from all three credit reporting agencies for free. This is not your score however. To check your credit score, you must use a service like MyFico (highly recommended). Your free credit report can be found at annualcreditreport.com
