I just wanted to let you all know…I got engaged last week!
My now fiancee had NO idea, and was in shock for about an hour after it happened. It was wonderful. I setup a bunch of flowers and used a friend of a friend to take pictures at a local coffee shop where my lady and I frequent often.
She said, “Yes!”
and now I’m getting married.
This has been the most awesome and craziest year of my life.
And I have to say, a lot of you readers knew something before I even did! I denied, even on my blog here, that we would ever get together.
I am now going to marry my best friend. The friend that has seen me go through a ton of the stuff I’ve blogged about here.
She was there with me when I didn’t have hot water at my house.
And when I was sleeping on the floor of my office.
And now we are getting married.
And I’m very, very happy.

WOOT!
Congrats. Marriage can be really fun.
Congratulations dk. Very happy for you. You have truly shown that you have what it takes to succeed
Yay!!! Congrats!! The best decision I ever made was to marry my hubby. I’m sure that you will find the same to be true. Yay! Now you get to jump into wedding planning. What fun!
You = The Man! Good work, sir.
OMG yay!!!!! Congratulations! It really has been an exciting year for you.
Congratulations! I was wondering if she’d found out by your earlier wedding ring posts. Guess not!
No, I felt pretty safe with that actually. She agreed a long time ago not to read my blog, and I trust her. She didn’t, she had no clue about the ring!
That’s awesome! Congrats!!
Good luck!
Make sure she knows everything about your financial situation before the marriage, she probably already does, but I would tell one more time with the numbers, that you were bankrupt and it how it can affect you and her.
It is important that she knows before the marriage and makes her decision based on all the facts.
I agree that info is important. She knows all the numbers, but we will go over them together at some point when we set out a budget and debt payment plan of attack (she has some credit card debt (under 10K) and student loans (around 60K). I did end up getting the ring from Blue Nile, and it’s been getting fantastic reviews from everyone who sees it.
Congrats! That’s really exciting!!!!
Let me know if you need a photographer. I’m not cheap, but (and I’m saying this about whoever you end up hiring, not just me) photography really isn’t something you want to skimp on if good pictures are important to you. I can’t tell you how many people that I’ve seen end up crying over their pictures because they hired a friend or a newbie to shoot their wedding. Unfortunately, that’s not a day you can get back.
Congratulations!
Feel free to email me if you want any advice on cheap weddings. Ours was pretty affordable and, if I remember correctly, you’re in the same general area we were.
At any rate, enjoy the euphoria that comes with a new engagement, and, most importantly, do NOT let anyone pressure you into things about your wedding you don’t want. I know some parents are pushy — thank goodness ours weren’t — and people might nag you about setting a date. Just do it all on your own time line!
I second Abagail’s thoughts… if I had it to do over again, I think hubby and I would have eloped. It’s more about the marriage than the wedding, and our wedding turned into a gigantic fiasco–power outages, the ceiling of the church collapsing, and everything–oh yes, there was more. Thank goodness it wasn’t a sign as initially feared (I say this now happily into seven years of marriage without ever so much as a fight…. apparently all the bad stuff worked itself out during the ceremony).
Congrats. Divorce is a cartain ticket to the poor house.
Congratulations! What wonderful news!
Congrats man! Marrying your best friend was the best advice I ever got when I was in my 20′s.
Hope she’s filthy rich too!
Congratulations!
Congratulations!
Congratulations! There’s nothing better than spending your life with your best friend.
Congratulations! Marrying your best friend is the way to go!
Congratulations, DebtKid! I’ve been following you forever and am VERY happy for you!
Congrats on the marriage! I bet it’s great to have both partners in a marriage be so responsible about their finances since it tends to be such a problem for partners who are clueless.
Hi Debtkid,
I was going through the money blogs in my favorites and I noticed I hadn’t looked at yours…in like a year. No offense, but I had a little girl and time got away from me.
Anyways, I was just thinking back to when you were so sad to think you wouldn’t have a girlfriend for a very long time. I’m excited for you now!! Congrats on the engagement. I’ve been married 7 years and I’m only 27. There’s some math for you.
Life is great! Wish you the best too.
P.S. The one secret no one seems to share these days is how amazingly awesome it is once you have a child of your own. Hard work, but so worth it.
Congrats!
