Facebook: I wish I knew how to quit you!
For being a big nerd and frequent techcrunch reader, I’m a pretty casual facebook user. I’m not new to the facebook craze, in fact I heard about facebook from a nerdier friend back before it had even been available at my fairly large university.
I was a pretty early user, and have casually used the site ever since.
Only in recent weeks have I begun to consider leaving you Facebook. Why? Because you’re beginning to scare me a bit.
First it was opening up to companies, and I thought, “OK, that makes sense”. Then it was anyone and I thought “Well, I guess I knew this would happen, time to update what I share”. Then came the newsfeed and I was a little upset, but that feature’s actually quite handy now, and I’ve figured out how to not share my updates with the world.
Then came applications, and next thing I know I’m getting “bitten” by all kinds of nasty creatures and I’m just starting to get annoyed. Now, when I go to look at a friends wall I have to wade through a pile of useless garbage just to get there. Hmmphh.
Now I hear about some social ad system you’re working on Facebook. And I’ll be honest, I haven’t read much about it, and I’m sure I can “opt-out” of it (I can, right?), but its making me think of leaving you.
I miss the old days when I thought I could build a facebook clone in like a few weeks because you were so simple. So sleek. Logging on was like doing a google search of my friends. Now…when I login, I feel like I’m almost in a greyscale MySpace.
I know you want to compete with Google. And I know you’ve got to make lots of money…but you’re losing me Facebook. You’re losing me. I’m just your average user, and I’ve been with you for awhile…but I’m beginning to wish I knew how to quit you.
