I guess we’ll find out in about an hour. I’m talking to the landlord about the situation in about an hour. I should know by the end of the day if I’m getting the place or not. I have almost $2000 in cash (well, near cash, its in checks that I have to cash (1K from the bloghunt showed up today! yay!)).
So, can 2K get an apartment in Seattle? No credit check? Guess I’ll find out.

Good luck DK. I hope that you get it. I am very impressed by your determination and fire.
MAKE it a great day.

Good luck Debt Kid!
I found your website courtesy a poster at the blog of an unnamed failed real estate speculator.
Your story was what I was looking to read about when I heard of his: classic risk taker’s story oops-i-screwed-the-pooch-let-met-get-it-fixed
before-mom-comes-home. Ever read Suess’s Cat in the Hat?
All I can say is “Damn, boy, you’re gonna make it!”.
After I had just turned 23 I started hitch hiking across southern Africa. After about six weeks I got stranded on the way to Sossusvlei, Namibia. Look it up on a map, it really does exist; classic desert as far as the eye can see or any man can walk in a week provided he has enough water which I didn’t. I had reached an all time low in my life; thousands of miles from home, no telephone, no car, no road (!), no airport, no money, no connection; no nothing would save me. It was just me and my wits.
Later in life I have drawn strength many times from that clear cut moment of despair. I have said to myself “if I can get out of that, then I can do anything”. After you have finished your penance I am sure that you will be able to draw strength from this event in a similar manner.
Now go out there and kick some ass today and don’t take ‘no’ for an answer!
The place I’m looking at has now changed their terms of the rental (due to my disclosing my terrible credit). They now want 2K down and 1st month’s rent of 1K. Three thousand dollars to get a 1 bd. place.
I just can’t do it. I do want this place, badly. But not for 3 thousand dollars. Even if I could scrounge together that, I would never be able to make payroll then on Wed.
They also wanted a $100 non-refundable to do the application.
This is madness, no this is Seattle’ rental market.
I’m upset right now. When I originally looked at this place it was a $500 deposit and just first month’s rent. Perfect. No talk of formal application, nothing.
I just wrote a social-commentary type post. I don’t know why, I was lying in the bathroom here in the office frustrated, and the idea came to me. I feel good about what I wrote, but maybe I just wasted more time. I will post it in any case.
And who know’s…your Namibia story is crazy! Thanks for sharing. It’s not that I’m taking a “no” answer here…it’s just that I just can’t plain swing 3K right now. Another opportunity will come. I may just have to try and save up more money, but I need to find something before I file my BK.
